CSA Facilitator Certification Program

A simple, proven three-stage framework for structuring any workshop — and the certification to prove you can run one.

In short

The CSA Facilitator Certification Program is a 5.5-day facilitation training and certification delivered across three modules, built on a three-stage workshop framework — Clarifying, Solutions, Action — that takes a group from an unclear problem to an agreed action plan of what, who and when.

Duration
5.5 days across 3 modules
Format
Public course · In-company · Certification track
Group size
Max 25 participants
Who it is for
Anyone who facilitates meetings, workshops or team events — from first-time facilitators to experienced practitioners

About this program

Most people who work with groups know a handful of group tools, but few can combine them into a workshop that produces genuine understanding, commitment and concrete action. The CSA model gives you a straightforward three-stage structure — Clarifying the problem or goal, finding the best Solutions, and agreeing a concrete Action plan of what, who and when.

The structure is simple enough for participants to follow and robust enough for any workshop related to organizational development. The certification program pairs that framework with the best tools for each stage.

What the certification actually certifies

We certify a real skill, not the number of pages you can write. Across the three modules you demonstrate that you can design and run a workshop that solves a client's real problem. Meet the standard and you receive a certificate evidencing professional workshop design and delivery capability.

What you gain

Group skills

Learn how decisions get made in groups and how to manage group dynamics — capability every organization needs.

Effective meetings and workshops

Organizations waste enormous amounts of time in low-yield meetings. This goes beyond chairing better: it builds consensus, participation and commitment.

Learning organizations

Stronger facilitation means better communication, faster problem solving, and quicker adaptation to change.

Program structure

How the modules build on each other.

Module 1 — Facilitation Essentials

2 days

Foundational participatory tools and the workshop stages. Suitable for every business professional who works with groups.

  • Simple, effective group tools — and a toolbox to take away
  • The stages of a workshop and how to design one
  • How to make workshops and meetings interactive and productive
  • Best facilitation practices that lead to success
  • Facilitating a basic workshop on any topic

Module 2 — Advanced Facilitation

2 days

Tools for complex situations and conflict, with a focus on workshop design and selecting the right tool for the moment.

  • Handling complexity and conflict in groups
  • Designing workshops for difficult or ambiguous topics
  • Choosing the right divergent or convergent tool for each task

Module 3 — Certification

1.5 days

An interactive assessment event. Participants design and run their own workshop and receive feedback from peers and trainers.

  • Design and deliver your own workshop
  • Structured feedback from trainers and peers
  • Certification against the facilitator competency standard

Tools and techniques

Every tool is demonstrated, practised and debriefed — you leave with a toolbox, not a reading list.

Certification standard

The competencies a workshop facilitator is assessed against.

The facilitator's role
Understanding the facilitator's neutral role — responsible for the group process, not for supplying content, opinions or priorities.
Workshop stages
A clear, logical flow that keeps everyone participating is the core of facilitation. The facilitator applies the simple three-stage CSA process.
Divergent and convergent tools
Selecting the right idea-generating or idea-selecting tool for the moment and the task, from a sufficient repertoire.
Psychological safety
The facilitator is transparent — explaining what the group will do and why, clarifying goals and roles, and connecting participants to each other.
Creating consensus
Balancing dialogue across individuals, small groups and the whole room; balancing divergence and convergence in decisions.
Visualisation
Making the group's thinking visible to focus attention, extend the group's working memory and support decisions.
Reaching the goal
The workshop objective is met — or the situation is clear to participants and the group has agreed its next step.

Outline

The shape of the program. Exact sequencing is adapted to the group and the context.

Day 1 — Theory and clarifying
  • Opening a workshop; getting the group ready and focused
  • The facilitator's role — what facilitation is and when to use it
  • Creating dialogue in a group and asking the right questions
  • Creating understanding — Me/We/Us and facilitative dialogue
  • Stage one of a workshop: clarifying the situation or problem
  • Tools: Me/We/Us and Force-field Analysis; bringing quiet participants in
  • Experiencing a facilitated process, then small-group reflection on application
Day 2 — Solutions, action and review
  • Recap and further tools for opening and reviewing
  • Generating and selecting solutions; divergent and convergent tools
  • Brainwriting and Gallery Walk — handling many questions at once
  • Actioning: Action Walk and the visual Action Roadmap — what, who, when
  • Reviewing with Timeline; exploring key learning events
  • Success factors and designing your own workshop
  • Business applications: problem solving, group development, change and strategy deployment

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers to what people ask before booking a program.

What does CSA stand for?

Clarifying, Solutions and Action — the three stages of the workshop framework. You start by clarifying the problem or goal, continue by finding the best solutions, and finish with a concrete action plan covering what, who and when.

Do I need previous facilitation experience?

No. Module 1 teaches first-time facilitators a simple structure and the tools to start with. Experienced facilitators typically use the program to acquire a different and more efficient way of selecting tools and designing workshops.

What do I have to do to become certified?

In the final module you design and deliver your own workshop and receive feedback from trainers and peers. Certification assesses a demonstrated skill — that you can design and run a workshop that solves a client's real problem — not written coursework.

How long is the full program?

5.5 days in total: Module 1 (2 days, facilitation essentials), Module 2 (2 days, advanced facilitation), Module 3 (1.5 days, certification).

Is the certification externally recognised?

According to the program documentation, the CSA Facilitator Certification Program is quality-endorsed by Education Finland, Finland's national education export programme, and its quality has been audited by the Finnish Education Evaluation Centre (FINEEC / karvi.fi).

Can the program be run inside our own organization?

Yes. It runs as a public course, as in-company training adapted to your context, or as part of a longer capability-building track. Group size is capped at 25 participants.
